Women Elected Officials Network
The network was established in 2016 and was announced on October 17, 2017 and has more than 90 members. Its idea emerged after several meetings and discussions of female municipal council members from all over Libya, and it was agreed to establish an independent, non-profit entity that seeks to reach a democratic society that guarantees the principle of considering women’s need in all projects and equal opportunities between women and men, and to promote, develop and raise the level of participation in the democratic transition in general and local affairs in particular. This is done by supporting capabilities for effective performance that ensures achieving sustainable development and establishing security and peace in Libya.
Mission and objectives
The vision of theWomen Elected Officials Network (WEON) is as follows:
Paving the way for better performance of women in all fields, as well as seeking to transfer electoral expertise and experiences and enabling women to exercise their political, service and economic tasks efficiently and effectively.
The WEON aims to:
• Exchanging expertise and experiences on issues of concern to women local and regional women for communication
• Strengthening and develoing the capacities and skills of women elected in the field of local government
• Seek to increase the representation of women in decision-making positions at all levels
• Networking and building alliances internally and externally with institutions with common goals
• Seeking to push for the adoption of laws that ensure that the needs of women are taken into account in all public policies
• Develop plans for advocay campaigns and establish pressure forces to activate and propose laws that preserves and assists women’s participation in all fields
• Combating all forms of violence against elected women in the local or national sphere and spreading the exchange of expertise and experiences on issues of concern to women locally, regionally and internationally
• Contribute to conflict resolution and peace in Libya
